PRP: What to Expect
Important Notes
Avoid NSAID’s like Motrin, Advil, Aleve and no aspirin the week before
You should not be taking steroids or prednisone
Hydrate prior to the procedure by drinking plenty of water
Procedure
First a standard blood draw is perfomed and the harvested blood about 40cc or 2 oz, is placed into a centrifuge. Here it is separated into its major components, isolating the platelets and bioactive proteins from the red blood cells.
Injection
The skin is sterilely prepped with alcohol and a cold spray and local injection may be used depending on the body site for injection. Ultrasound guidance is also used particularly for a shoulder injection. Similar to a cortisone shot, which is quick and typically minimally painful.
Post Injection
Afterwards, you may experience mild pain at the injection site for 1-2 weeks as it may take a few weeks for the beneficial effect.
Ice to this area and Tylenol may be used for the first two weeks but again try to avoid the anti inflammatory medications during this time frame. The prp will amplify a local healing inflammatory response which we don’t want to diminish initially.
Hold any physical therapy for the initial two weeks before resuming if ordered
